Hopefully with the good weather next week we will see a reaction on the course with increased soil temperatures, moisture in the ground and day light. As planned we have concentrated a lot of time with the greens to get them up to standard and we will now spend more time fixing other areas.

Greens

May’s weather has been a little unstable with a warm start to the month and then 10-14 days with cooler temperatures. The greens have been good since we opened, but the cooler weather hasn’t helped push them closer to summer standard just yet. We are happy with the coverage of grass on the greens and I had planned to verti-cut and dress the greens this week, but due to missing a cutting day last Friday (17th May) and the rain this week, we will schedule to do this next week(week 22). The height of cut is currently at 4mm and will stay at this height for the foreseeable future. The greens had a light liquid feed last week and will get a full granular feed Tomorrow(22/5), this is needed due to the amount of rain we have received in the last week or so.

Tees

Some of the tees are in poor standard right now, this is because of them dying last year from the lack of water and disease scars from the winter. The tees with disease scars have started to recover, but the ones that died last season still need some extra time. Now that the warm nights have returned we have seen some new grass coming from the repaired tees but they still need some help. The second feed on the tees will go out next week and we should see improvements week by week. The areas that are really struggling for grass will be aerated, seeded and sand dressed again.

Fairways

The fairways are all at different stages right now. There are many that have good coverage of grass and just need a little help from some fertiliser, this will be applied on Thursday ready for Friday’s rain. Other fairways that lost grass last year from the lack of water will need some extra attention. Once the fertiliser is applied we will know more about how much extra work needs to be done. Sand has been delivered to fill in the trench drainage lines that haven’t yet recovered, this is to help with presentation and so the mowers can cuts these areas without damaging the machines.

Summary

Hopefully with the good weather next week we will see a reaction on the course with increased soil temperatures, moisture in the ground and day light. As planned we have concentrated a lot of time with the greens to get them up to standard and we will now spend more time fixing other areas.

Best regards

James and the greenkeepers.
